‘남극’ 상황이 심상치 않다…진흙투성이가 되어버린 펭귄들

지구온난화의 탓일까.

지난 6일 아르헨티나 기상청은 남극 반도 끝에 위치한 아르헨티나 에스페란사 연구기지에서 측정한 기온이 18.3도를 웃돌았으며, 사흘 뒤에는 남극 대륙 북단 시모어섬의 마림비오 연구기지에서 20.75도로 관측됐다.

이렇게 남극에서 역사상 처음으로 영상 20도가 넘는 기온이 측정되며, 눈이 아니라 진흙으로 변해버린 펭귄 서식지의 상황이 공개됐다.

지난 16일(현지 시각) 내셔널지오그래픽은 SNS를 통해 진흙투성이가 된 아델리 펭귄들의 모습을 공개했다.

이를 찍은 것은 네덜란드 사진작가 프란스 랜팅으로, 그는 “기온이 상승하며 눈과 얼음이 녹아 진흙이 되어 흐르고 있다. 남극 아델리 펭귄 서식지의 펭귄들은 기후 혼란이 야기한 새로운 현실에 대처하는 데 난항을 겪고 있다”라고 밝혔다.

그는 특히 온몸이 진흙으로 젖어버린 새끼 펭귄들을 걱정했다.

새끼 펭귄의 깃털에는 방수기능이 없어 오랫동안 젖은 상태로 노출되면 저체온증으로 목숨이 위태로워지기 때문이다.

최근 기온 상승으로 인해 남극에 비가 내리는 날이 늘어나면서 혹한 속 폭우로 인하여 동사하는 새끼 펭귄들이 늘어나고 있다.

어른 펭귄이 먹이를 구하러 가거나 죽어서 빈자리가 생기면 새끼 펭귄은 혼자 남아서 저체온증으로 사망하게 되는 것이다.
